The Southern Illinois Miners lost 9-4 to the River City Rascals on Friday night in the opener of their weekend series at CarShield Field in O'Fallon, Missouri.
The Rascals took the lead against Corey Sessions (2-7) in the bottom of the first inning on a two-run home run by Josh Ludy to take a 2-0 lead. They would then add two runs to that lead with four hits in the bottom of the third inning on four singles, with RBI hits in the frame by Jason Merjano and Ludy making the score 4-0.
Southern Illinois would take advantage of two leadoff walks by River City starter Hector Hernandez (8-8) in the fourth inning to plate three runs, as after Romeo Cortina and Nolan Earley drew the bases-on-balls, Ryan Lashley pulled a double inside the third base bag to make it 4-1. After a wild pitch by Hernandez made it 4-2, Craig Massoni's RBI groundout got the Miners within a run at 4-3.
The was the closest they would get, however, as the Rascals used three hits and a walk, including a pair of doubles, with two outs to plate three more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and increase their lead to 7-3. The Miners would get one run right back in the top of the sixth, with Earley scoring from first base on a single by Craig Massey and an error on third baseman Braxton Martinez, but the Rascals would add on again in the eighth with a pair of runs for the final score of 9-4.
Southern Illinois will return to action and will look to even the series on Saturday night at 6:35 p.m. Robby Rowland will pitch for the Miners opposite River City right-hander Zeb Sneed.
