The Southern Illinois Miners were shut out 6-0 on Saturday at CarShield Field by the River City Rascals, dropping the first two games of the weekend series in O'Fallon, Missouri.
The Rascals scored an unearned run to break the ice on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second inning against Robby Rowland (2-3) on an RBI infield hit by Paul Kronenfeld to make the score 1-0, then added three more in the bottom of the third inning to push the lead out to 4-0 on a bases-loaded walk by Mike Jurgella, an RBI single by Jason Merjano and a sacrifice fly by Josh Silver. River City would also score a single run on a fielder's choice by Kronenfeld in the fifth inning, and also one in the eighth on a solo home run by Braxton Martinez to complete the scoring.
The Miners were stymied by Zeb Sneed (5-1), who held them scoreless over seven innings with seven strikeouts. He scattered six hits in the game, with London Lindley amassing two in four trips to the plate including a double, but Southern Illinois could not come up with the clutch hits they needed, getting baserunners on against Rascals pitching in the last eight innings of the game, but stranding nine men on base, seven of which in scoring position, in suffering the loss.
Southern Illinois and River City will each play their final game of the year against each other on Sunday at 4:05 p.m. at CarShield Field.
