Miners Stumble In Schaumburg, Fall To Boomers

The Southern Illinois Miners took an early lead against the Schaumburg Boomers on Tuesday night at Boomers Stadium in their initial road contest of the 2018 season, but could not hold it as the Boomers rallied to take the lead, then piled on late for a 9-4 result, dropping the Miners to 2-2.

In the second inning, Conor Sullivan drew a bases-loaded walk off of Boomers starter Joe Hauser (1-0) to give the Miners a 1-0 lead, but the Boomers rallied in the bottom half for three runs against Billy Griffin (0-1) to take a 3-1 lead as the first four batters reached on base hits. In the top of the next inning, Chance Shepard homered to left-center field, his third of the season, to slice the Schaumburg advantage to 3-2, but the Boomers answered in the bottom of the inning with a run of their own to make it 4-2.

Both teams also scored runs in the fourth inning, with the Miners' run coming on a two-out single by Corey Dempster. But the Boomers were able to push the lead out to 6-3 in the sixth inning, holding that advantage until the eighth inning. Leading off the frame, Joe Dudek hit his first home run as a Miner, a solo blast to right field, to again whittle the Boomers' lead down to two runs at 6-4, but Schaumburg took advantage of a trio of walks and a hit batter in the bottom of the eighth to score three more times for the final margin.

Dudek finished 2-for-4 with his first two hits as a Miner in the defeat, while Shepard homered for the third time in four games on the year, but the Miners fell back to .500 with their second straight defeat. They will look to even the series on Wednesday morning with an 11:00 a.m. matinee start at Boomers Stadium. Robby Rowland will pitch for Southern Illinois, opposed by Kit Fowler for the Boomers.

The Southern Illinois Miners are the Frontier League's winningest franchise since debuting in 2007, winning the 2012 Frontier League Championship as well as division titles in 2010, 2014, 2015 and 2016. They have been awarded the Frontier League Organization of the Year award three times since their inception, and also set a new Frontier League attendance record in their inaugural season.
