The Southern Illinois Miners concluded their 2021 season with a 7-3 victory over the Gateway Grizzlies at Rent One Park in Marion, finishing with a record of 54 wins and 42 losses.
In the bottom of the first inning, Bryant Flete reached on an error by Gateway third baseman Abdiel Diaz which proved to be costly when Nolan Earley followed with a mammoth, two-run home run off the video board in right-center field to stake Southern Illinois to a 2-0 lead, a lead that they would never relinquish. The Grizzlies would score single runs in the third and fifth innings to cut into their deficit, but each time, the Miners responded with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning- Flete homered leading off the third, while Jared Mang's two-out single in the fifth put the Miners ahead by a score of 4-2.
In the sixth, the Mines would expand their lead with four hits in the frame, with Flete earning his second RBI of the night on an infield single that scored Jarrod Watkins from third base to make it 5-2. Later, in the eighth, Southern Illinois would add on again with two runs in the frame on a solo home run by Watkins and an RBI single by Earley for a 7-2 advantage.
Gateway would score a run in the ninth, but would get no closer as the Miners capped off a series sweep. Earley led the way with a 2-for-4 performance and three RBIs on the night while Flete also went 2-for-4 while scoring twice and driving in two as well. Watkins and Arturo Nieto also had two-hit days at the plate, with Watkins scoring a pair of runs as the Miners ended their season on a high note.
